Study Abroad

Theatre and Culture (THRE 350 and GNST 250). The class culminates in a two week study abroad trip to Bulgaria.

Why Bulgaria

More and more colleges offer to their students variety of study and travel abroad opportunities. Although Bulgaria is not as familiar destination as some of the other European countries, this trip will allow students to get acquainted with the politics, economics, history, religion, culture, and arts of one of the oldest cultures in Europe. Considering that Bulgaria:

-         has more than 13 centuries of history

-         is the third country in the world to accept Christianity as official religion

-         just recently became a democracy after many years of socialism

-         is known for creating the third official alphabet in Europe

-         possesses some of the oldest artifacts in Europe

-         owns a  large Thracian golden treasure

-         has more than 20 monasteries some of which date from 9th c. and most of which operate today

-         has more than 35 state theatres, operas, symphonies, etc. as well as a well preserved Roman theatre, and a wide variety of cultural venues, etc.,

The course would not only introduce students to the theatre practices and traditions of an old country of great importance to the European history, but also give them a broader perspective on European history and culture.
